Arounna Khounnoraj of Bookhou | Punch Needle Workshop

June 2 - 7, 2022

SOLD OUT

Punch needle embroidery has taken the craft world by storm, and Arounna Khounnoraj of Bookhou is at the helm of this movement. During this Ace Camp you will explore landscape elements and use it as inspiration for your punch needle art. Arounna will take you through her design process starting with creating your own collages which you will use as a reference to begin your punch needle piece. In addition to wall art pieces you will learn about creating other items such as pillows and bags. You will also experiment with a wool-based natural dyeing workshop, you will further incorporate this yarn into your punch needle projects.

Let’s venture to the friendly coastal province of Newfoundland, Canada. Bright houses painted like rainbows spill over the salt-drenched cliffs of St. John’s. June is an ideal time to try and spot icebergs as they float past the harbour, not to be outdone by Humpback Whales + charming Puffin colonies. Don’t miss our incredible adventure through this stunning coastal province!

Arounna Khounnoraj is a Canadian artist and maker working in Toronto where she immigrated with her family from Laos at the age of four. While her education includes a master’s degree in fine arts in sculpture and ceramics, it was through subsequent residencies that she found her current focus in fibre arts. In 2002 she started bookhou, a multi-disciplinary studio with her husband John Booth, where Arounna explores screen printing and a variety of textile techniques such as embroidery and punch needle. She creates objects such as bags, home goods and textile art.

In addition, Arounna’s passion for creating and belief in the importance of the handmade has allowed her to become one of Canada’s most sought-after mentors and educators working with colleges, workshops and social media projects.

Currently, Arounna’s work using the punch needle has created a social media sensation. From wall art to cushions and bags, her punch needle pieces highlight her botanical and abstract designs and her sense of colour have brought a modern, new life to an old technique.

She is the author of Punch Needle: Master the Art of Punch Needling Accessories for You and Your Home, which was published in April 2019. Learn more about Arounna at bookhou.com, or follow her on Instagram at @bookhou.
