ABOUT THE TRIP

Vietnamese food is fresh, flavoursome and exceptionally healthy. Ace Camps has designed a 7 day journey offering the opportunity to discover the culinary wonders in Hoi An - with a side trip to Hue. You will have a chance to bring home Vietnam's best kept secrets through food tours, cooking classes and dining at the best restaurants we can find.

You'll learn how to eat like the locals during a street food walking tour, visit the famous fish market, take a scenic guided bicycle tour to Tra Que Village and try the world's best Banh Mi.

Included in this tour is a traditional workshop to learn the skills of lantern making, a day trip to Hue and a journey to Thuan Tinh Island for a cooking class. 

Hoi An is Vietnam’s most atmospheric and delightful town. This longtime trading port city offers a distinctive regional cuisine that blends centuries of cultural influences from East and Southeast Asia. 

Some people call Hoi An the food capital in Vietnam and it’s easy to see why. Hoi An has many delicious dishes that can only be found here and nowhere else in Vietnam. The quaint streets are decorated with hanging lanterns, colourful historic homes, and cozy coffee houses that set the scene for this impressive fishing village. Even though Hoi An is relatively small, it’s a remarkable town guaranteed to make your senses come alive.

Hue’s gastronomy is elegant, light and different from other regions of Vietnam. Spices, especially chili, play an important role.  You can get Hue cuisine elsewhere in Vietnam, but it never tastes quite the same.

Vietnam is considered one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful countries. Its colonial yesteryear of heavy French influence remain a part of today’s modern life as evident through an array of colonial buildings and French-Vietnamese epicurean delights. This Ace Camp offers you a chance to bring home Vietnam’s best-kept culinary secrets by taking part in hands-on cooking led by the region’s top chefs.

On this tour you will have a chance to see and taste it all and…...as always there will be free time for you to explore on your own. We think that's important.

*Rooms are shared with one other person. Unfortunately, there is no opportunity for single rooms.  

Lunches + dinners are at various locations and are selected to give you the most authentic experience. We find the best food in Hoi An!

This Ace Camp is limited to 10 people.

Airfare to Da Nang, Vietnam is not included. Airport transfers to and from the airport in Da Nang are included.

Airport Pick-up is only for indicated dates.  Should you plan to arrive earlier to stay at the hotel you will be responsible for your own transfer fees. We can help you arrange your transfer.

Cycling is easy with no hills.

There will be no refunds for this Ace Camp due to the planning and logistics involved. When you register be sure to know all you can about travelling to Vietnam.

THE MORNING GLORY COOKBOOK

Everyone will receive their copy of Taste Vietnam - The Morning Glory Cookbook by Trinh Diem Vy while we are in Vietnam. It will be a great reference while attending Ms Vy’s Countryside Bicycle Tour & Cooking Class.


TRAVEL NOTES

Consult a health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel. (side note:  If you have any pending health concerns you should contact your healthcare provider prior to registration of this Ace Camp)

PASSPORTS + VISAS

You must have a valid passport and a visa to enter Vietnam. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay, and you must have at least one blank visa page.

Nationals of many countries require a visa to enter Vietnam, these requirements differ from country to country and are subject to change. Contact your government office to find out the particulars. 

WHERE WE'RE STAYING:

Almanity Hoi An Wellness Resort, reflects the essence of a cultural heritage in its architecture and philosophy while adding a modern twist. Each room is elegantly decorated with traditional wood furnishings. The Resort is set around a stunning purified salt-water swimming pool and a lush Zen garden. It's located only a short walk from the ancient town of Hoi An. An onsite organic farm supplies the hotel restaurant which also features an interactive show kitchen.

You will also have the opportunity to enjoy wellness spa treatments, yoga classes and unlimited usage of the steam/sauna room at My Chi Spa. The resort also offers a range of complimentary in-house activities, including learning Vietnamese language, herbal tea meditation and an Art Gallery with regular International Art Exhibitions. 

Please note: Room size and layouts may differ from the traditional North American standards - the two individual beds may be situated closer together.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

An Ace Camp administrator will email you when it is time to make your travel arrangements. This email will always be sent 60 days or more before your trip departs unless you book within 60 prior to the camp. 

Da Nang Airport is the third largest international airport in Vietnam. The nearest airport to Hoi An is Da Nang International Airport with the airport code DAD.

 

ABOUT THE FOOD ON THIS ACE CAMP

Vietnamese cuisine is heavy influenced by seafood and peanuts in their cuisine.  Common ingredients include fish sauce, shrimp paste, pork, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables.

Vegetarian options always available.

Unfortunately we are unable to handle specific dietary requirements, allergies or intolerances on this trip as some of our meals will be served family style or with limited options.

ACE CAMP TOUR LEADER

The ACE CAMP TOUR LEADER is a part of your group and are there to look out for your safety, to help resolve issues, and to make sure you get what you want from your vacation. The Tour Leader will make sure that everyone who wants company has it, including dinners when no group meal is scheduled.

They also work with the local guides to insure the right combination of pace, information, and duration - and, well...keep the ball rolling.

 


ITINERARY

 

DAY ONE - ARRIVAL

Travel Day - Welcome to Hoi An!

Arrive at Da Nang Airport where you will be picked up and driven to the Almanity Hoi An Wellness Resort - The hotel is about an hour from the airport. 

Relax or go for a stroll and in the evening we will get to know each other with a special meal at the hotel.

DAY TWO - WALKING FOOD TOUR

An early, light breakfast at the hotel as we're heading on a food tour this morning.

Vietnam is all about street food, with Hoi An as no exception. Today we head out on a morning street food walking tour.  This tour will give you a good sense of what food is like in Hoi An as well as an idea of how to get around. The guide will show us where to shop for special cooking and kitchen gadgets. 

In the afternoon we visit the Old town to discover historic Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that retains architectural styles of the many nations that used its port. The tour will include the heritage architecture and narrow streets, the Japanese Covered Bridge, Fujian Assembly Hall, Chuc Thanh Pagoda and Hoi An Museum of History & Culture.

Dinner is at Mango Mango restaurant tonight which is run by Chef Duc, a true legend in Hoi An.

DAY THREE - FISH MARKET + LANTERN MAKING

An early to visit the Hoi An fish market - for those interested. Hoi An is very famous for the best fish in this region, and in the early morning, hundreds of people rush to this wholesale market for the best picks of the day. 

After the early morning at the fish market, we will make our way back to the hotel for breakfast. The rest of this morning is free time to relax or wander on your own.

We meet in the afternoon for a traditional Hoi An lantern workshop. Hoi An people believe that hanging lanterns in front of their house brings luck, happiness, and wealth to the family. These lanterns are easy to fold to put in your luggage.

For dinner this evening, we head just outside of Hoi An to a beautiful private home, for a meal prepared by a local chef and culinary expert. Our host will prepare us a wonderful feast while introducing you to the ingredients used in traditional Vietnamese cooking.

DAY FOUR - COUNTRYSIDE BICYCLE TOUR + COOKING CLASS

Following breakfast we head to Ms Vy’s Market Restaurant, author of “Taste Vietnam, The Morning Glory Cookbook.” for a Countryside Bicycle Tour & Cooking Class.

A unique culinary experience, where you will gain an understanding of how ingredients are selected and assembled to create local dishes. As with all of Ms Vy's culinary ventures the key purpose of Vy's Market Restaurant is to give customers a sensory food experience unlike any other.

Journey through the countryside by bicycle and learn how to cook four of Hoi An's famous local dishes, including White Rose (steamed dumplings with pork and prawn mousse) and Banh Xeo (crispy pancake). Vegetarian options available.

We continue by bike to Tra Que Village to learn about herbs, visit Hoi An's only Cao Lau noodle maker, a bean sprout grower's home, a countryside market, see water buffalo, exotic birds and wildlife. Following this we have an interesting and informative tour of Vy's Market Restaurant watching live cooking demonstrations with many food tastings.

Afternoon is free to explore.

Dinner this evening at White Rose Restaurant. We will sample their signature ‘white rose’ dish, known locally as Banh Bao Vac, the name ‘white rose’ has French origin. White Rose dumplings are a specialty of Hoi An that you won’t find anywhere else. (Vegetarian options available)

 

DAY FIVE - VISIT TO THE IMPERIAL CAPITAL OF HUE

Road trip to Hue - one of Vietnam's most spectacular attractions. This quiet city is widely known for the magnificent architecture of its citadel, royal tombs, pagodas, and temples built under the Nguyen dynasty.  Hue is a gorgeous combination of old and new modern buildings and century old fortress walls.

This full day tour will include visits to the Imperial City, the Emperor’s Private Residence, the Perfume River boat ride, Thien Mu Pagoda (considered by many as the unofficial symbol of Hue. This is an active Buddhist monastery with its origins dating back to 1601) and Khai Dinh Royal Tomb.

Lunch is included in Hue.

Dinner - on your own. There are so many wonderful restaurants to discover.

DAY SIX - THUAN TINH ISLAND COOKING CLASS

Breakfast at the Hotel.

Thuan Tinh Island for a cooking class after a trip to the market to purchase some fresh, locally grown herbs. We will board a river boat for a 30 minute ride to Thuan Tinh Island - an ecological zone.

To visit the local village, we take a row boat ride through the water coconut trees, followed by a walk through the gardens to visit Ms. Hoa’s house and to meet her family. Ms. Hoa's offers grilled rice cakes and iced tea on arrival. 

Learn how to  prepare a 4-course Vietnamese lunch in an open air setting overlooking the water.

The rest of this afternoon is free time for you to relax, shop or explore. Our trip leader will be happy to provide you with suggestions of things to do.

We gather for dinner at one of Hoi An's best vegetarian restaurants - Minh Hien Quan Chay.

DAY SEVEN - FREE DAY + FINAL DINNER AT MORNING GLORY

Today is a free day. You may want to visit one of the local beaches.  We can help you with any adventure you'd like to take.

An Bang Beach is one of the few stretches of beach in Hoi An that's relatively unspoiled by development. A popular destination for soaking up the sun and enjoying an array of seaside activities. Cua Dai Beach is another great option as it is often claimed to be Vietnam's most stunning coastal shore.

For our last dinner together, we will dine at one more of Ms Vy's culinary ventures Morning Glory Signature Restaurant, known for refined and contemporary Vietnamese cuisine.

DAY EIGHT - DEPARTURE DAY

Breakfast at hotel      

Departure day: After breakfast, we say our final goodbyes and head on our way.

Airport drop-offs will be arranged after final travel arrangements have been sent to Ace Camps administration.
