The World - Landscapes + Cultures
A blog called THE BURNING HOUSE.
"If your house was burning, what would you take with you? It's a conflict between what's practical, valuable and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question.
What a great discovery this website is: The World We Live In Check out the world while sitting at your desk. See the photo below with the iceberg and how little the boat looks. (note to self - must see iceberg)
The American Festivals Project which was funded partially through a National Geographic Young Explorers Grant will take you on a journey of some interesting, bizarre, festivals and competitions that happen throughout the United States. Photographers Ross McDermott and Andrew Owen road tripped over 40,000 miles often riding in a diesel truck powered by waste vegetable oil and documented their journey. Some of the events they photographed included The Rainbow Gathering, Bridge Day, Hick Festival, Pine Ridge Pow Wow Portraits, Middle of Nowhere Competition, Mardi Gras Indians, Train Watching, The Quiet Festival, The Prison Rodeo and Fasnacht. Weird and interesting bits of culture but fun times for sure.
This is one innovative collaboration that promotes the beauty of a country.
A project that follows the artists of another era - The Group of Seven. “The project aims to explore the ways in which wilderness shapes our cultural imagination." (oh, yes, we are a big wide, full of nature country but we also have Anthropologie, J. Crew, Tiffany's, Chanel, Ikea..and no, we don't live in igloos.) Discovery World HD is launching a new 13-part Canadian series that takes viewers through Canada's national parks, with musicians as the tour guides. The National Parks Project premiered March 19 and is narrated by Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie and to help celebrate the centennial of Parks Canada the series will feature three musicians per episode, including Sarah Harmer, Shad, Billy Talent and Matt Mays. Each episode will explore a different park. The episodic descriptions, artist bios and photography, as well as information about the individual parks – featuring an interactive map of the 13 locations – will be available at discoveryworldhd.ca All 13-episodes of the NATIONAL PARKS PROJECT will be available on broadband one week after broadcast at watch.discovery.ca. If you like nature, music and are interested in Canadian Parks this is one great series.
Project: Sky Walkers // Client: Toyota Scion // Project Overview: In 2006, FriendsWithYou opened Art Basel Miami with a large-scale inflatable procession that is comparable in scale to the Macy’s Day Parade. Commissioned by Toyota Scion, “Skywalkers” featured 18 giant blimps (designed by FriendsWithYou & our artist friends), over 300 volunteers, a high school marching band, and thousands of attendees all working together to celebrate the Earth as the newest member of the universal community. The parade illuminated the skies of Miami’s South Beach and made international headlines around the world.
