About the trip:

We are heading to Cape Town and surrounding wineries for an amazing food and wine tour with Nikki Werner and Brandon de Kock - authors of the book - Cook Better - a book about cooking. Think of it as cooking between the lines. Or what your mother should have told you.  This Ace Camp will give you opportunities to dine at some of the best restaurants in Cape Town, tour wineries, visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, take Masterclasses in cooking methods from Nikki + Brandon, participate in a Masterclass Gin tasting and tour around Cape Town.

The Mother City, home to soaring Table Mountain, golden beaches and bountiful vineyards, is an old pro at capturing people’s hearts. Cape Town is the quintessential melting pot: it is a city alive with creativity, colour, sounds and tastes. 

Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu and traditional African beliefs coexist in this proudly multicultural city. They all bring unique flavours to Cape Town’s rich Creole melting pot.

Surrounded by ocean on three sides, with the landmark Table Mountain soaring 1,000 meters above the packed streets of the City Bowl, Cape Town rightly places high -- maybe number one -- in any ranking of the most scenic big cities on the planet.

Wrenching yourself away from the magnetic mountain and all the delights of the Cape Peninsula is a challenge, but within an hour you can exchange urban landscapes for the charming towns, villages and bucolic estates of Winelands destinations such as Stellenbosch, Luddite and Constantia Wineland - with two special lunches at Constantia and Luddite.

BRANDON DE KOCK

Brandon’s career includes marketing, public speaking, publishing and global travel – all held together by a pen and a camera. His freelance work has been widely published, he was editor of Compleat Golfer magazine and creative director for Ramsay Media. He was also a member of the curatorial panel for Cape Town World Design Capital 2014 and is now director of storytelling for WhyFive – an insight-driven research company.

NIKKI WERNER

It’s hard to introduce Nikki Werner without also mentioning Brandon de Kock – her partner and co-author of Cook. Better. The couple has been cooking, eating and travelling together for 14 years. Through their work they’ve met a lot of chefs, eaten at a lot of restaurants, done a lot of research and made a lot of notes. Nikki studied journalism and has compiled the food pages for titles such as Elle Decoration and Marie Claire, in addition to stints as food editor for Fair Lady and Women’s Health magazine. She currently works as a food researcher, writer and consultant.

Winelands – Wine tasting paired with some of the most beautiful landscapes on earth, century old architecture and awe-inspiring food.

Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve – the south western tip of Africa, is a must-see destination offering dramatic scenery, fantastic hiking trails and deserted beaches with spectacular ocean views.

Saturday market at the Old Biscuit Mill – Market day is an amazing array of colours, crafts and regional food.

Boulders Beach & Simon's Town – home to one of the only penguin populations on the African mainland. 

Free day in Cape Town  – optional activities include a visit to Robben Island, relaxing on one of Cape Town's beautiful beaches, checking out the art galleries of Hout Bay, walking the 'Museum Mile', taking a street art tour, experiencing a cooking class, + so much more!

Pinotage, a red wine completely unique to South Africa and made from a grape that is a hybrid of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir. It can be a very polarizing quaff, but is absolutely worth a try.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS

ACE CAMPS  will email you when it is time to make your travel arrangements. This email will always be sent 60 days or more before your trip departs unless you book within 60 prior to the camp. If this Ace Camp Explore fills prior to 60 days we will let you know right away so you can plan.

You will be met at the airport and brought to the hotel.  More information will be sent after your registration.

WEATHER

Cape Town has a Mediterranean-style climate: wet and cool winters, dry and warm summers. The annual average temperature in Cape Town is a delightful 17 degrees.

March is the beginning of Autumn in the city and temperatures range from 22C during the day to 14C in the evenings. One day can be hot and dry, while the next can be much cooler with some rain.  It is best to dress in layers and bring an umbrella.

ACE CAMP TOUR LEADER

The ACE CAMP TOUR LEADER is a part of your group and are there to look out for your safety, to help resolve issues, and to make sure you get what you want from your vacation. The Tour Leader will make sure that everyone who wants company has it, including dinners when no group meal is scheduled.

They also work with the local guides to insure the right combination of pace, information, and duration - and, well...keep the ball rolling.

DAY ONE - Wednesday, April 11, 2018

TRAVEL DAY

Dinner

Make your way from Cape Town International Airport.  (Information for transfer will be provided)
Settle in your room and make yourself comfortable or wander around Bree Street and surrounding area to check out the neighborhood.

Meet + Greet and Dinner    TBD - we will know better after receiving arrival times from all participants.

We know you will be tired after traveling and will aim to find an amazing meal close to the hotel.                                             

DAY TWO - Thursday, April 12, 2018

KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDEN, BREAKFAST UNDER THE TREES, TOUR OF CAPE TOWN AND CRAFT GIN MASTERCLASS

An early morning adventure to Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden guided by Nikki.  You will see and smell the Malva plants and learn about Malva pudding. Malva pudding is a wildly popular South African dessert popularised in the Cape and Nikki will share the myths and back stories around this dish.
                
After Kirstenbosch you will head to the Gardener's cottage for brunch - a local secret spot tucked under the trees.            
    
Following breakfast - a tour around Cape Town

After the tour we head for a Masterclass led by Leigh and Lucy, owners of Hope on Hopkins to learn about the exploding craft gin scene happening in Cape Town.

DAY THREE - Friday, April 13, 2018

WINE TOUR  / COOKING MASTERCLASS - OVERGAAUW, WINERY VISITS

Head out of town for a taste of the Stellenbosch wine lands and wineries. 
A braai (barbecue) - a quintessentially South African way of eating and entertaining.

Masterclass taught by Brandon – demonstrating his fat-stack method of cooking lamb over coals, followed by a comparative tasting of the lamb chops from different parts of the Karoo and Overberg.

For dinner we will dine on the lamb chops cooked on the braai.

DAY FOUR - Saturday, April 14, 2018

CAPE PENINSULA TOUR

Discover the highlights of Table Mountain National Park as you embark on a full-day tour around the Cape Peninsula. Travel in and out of pretty bays, see species of African game, stroll with penguins and admire exotic plants as you explore one of the continent's most southerly points.
As you drive south from Cape Town, pass through attractive coastal towns such as Hout Bay and watch the surfers riding the waves. Leave the urban areas behind as you embark on a breathtakingly beautiful drive towards Cape Point. As you enter the nature reserve, see the roaming troops of chacma baboons and, with luck, kudu antelope and zebra.

DAY FIVE - Sunday, April 15, 2018

WINE TOUR/ COOKING DEMONSTRATION - OVERGAAUW
Nikki will demonstrate the cook. better. principles, which can be applies to any kind of cooking. The principles will be illustrated through a number of classical Cape dishes, including bobotie, a dish of spiced mince lamb with a savoury custard topping (something like moussaka) and butternut soup. In addition Nikki will share the history and back stories of these dishes, along with her research into malva pudding, a wildly popular SA dessert. The day will conclude with a comparative cheese and wine tasting by the fire.
                                        
DAY SIX - Monday, April 16, 2018

WINE TASTING AND LUNCH AT LUDDITE, DRIVE BACK TO CAPE TOWN, FREE EVENING.

Following breakfast you will drive to Luddite for personal tasting with Niels Verburg in his cellar followed with lunch cooked by his wife, Penny Verburg, in their home         

In the afternoon we head back to Cape Town.  Bot River, where Luddite is located,  is 90km from the city center - the drive will take about 1.5 hours depending on our stops along the way.

DAY SEVEN - Tuesday, April 17, 2018

FREE DAY TO EXPLORE CAPE TOWN ON YOUR OWN

We know you want time on your own to shop, relax or take in some of the adventures Cape Town has to offer.  Today you can head to Cape Town’s Alcatraz: Robben Island, the grim penal colony five miles off the coast where Nelson Man­dela spent nearly two decades for sabotage against the apartheid government.    You may wish to head to Table Mountain, or shop on Bree Street or browse through the markets or head to the Old Biscuit Mill, go to one of Cape Town’s beaches or go to one of Cape Town’s Spas.  Nikki and Brandon will be sure to give you some advice on what’s the best to see and do.  

                                                                 
DAY EIGHT - Wednesday, April 18, 2018

A CURATED TOUR OF CONSTANTIA WINELANDS AND OUR GRAND FINALE LUNCH

After an early breakfast a car will pick you up at 8:00am and Brandon will lead a curated tour of Constantia winelands. Brandon's trip through the winelands will include two wineries and where winemaking really began in South Africa. 
        
Finishing with lunch at Beau Constantia or Constantia Glen as a grand finale.
            
Back to the Cape Town Heritage followed by dinner on your own.
