OCTOBER 1 - 9, 2018

 Bar Palladio / Jaipur, India

This 8 day Ace Camp will offer you the opportunity to explore textile techniques, such as motif placement, repeat patterns, relief printing (thinking in reverse) and gaining insight into how you can work your small business to success.

Jen Hewett will be teaching a 2.5 day workshop about surface printing in Jaipur, known as the Pink City located in Rajasthan, Northern India. Think Northern India and it will conjure up colourful images including the Taj Mahal, the holy River Ganges, tigers, turbans, saris, tuktuks, rickshaws and more...

We will be visiting workshops (Indian block-printing studios) with traditional authentic carving and hand block printing demonstration and learn how the artisans print with the blocks on their long tables.

For inspiration visit we'll head to Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing and see their comprehensive history of the art of block printing as well as beautiful and historical fabric samples and articles of clothing. After the museum we will visit Brigitte Singh's Studio, one of the best block printing studios in the world that use traditional hand carved wooden blocks. You will see hand block printing demonstrations by the experts and learn how the artisans print using multiple blocks to form their patterns with different colours.

You will have hands-on experience in two different printing factories. We will head to Bagru to learn Mud Resist -  the art of printing with mud and dying with indigo one day and the next head back to learn about natural dyes and block printing. Both days you will return with a shawl made by you with the wooden blocks of your choice.

There are "days off" to explore, shop or visit sites that interest you. Head out on an elephant tour one evening or off for a hot air balloon experience. Our land agent can help you with any of your extra travel experiences and will be on site at the hotel for discussions.

Jen Hewett is a printmaker, surface designer, textile artist and teacher. A lifelong Californian, Jen combines her love of loud prints and saturated colors with the textures and light of the California landscapes to create highly-tactile, visually-layered, printed textiles.

When she’s not creating in her San Francisco studio or teaching her popular block printing classes, she can be found hiking with her rescue dog Gus, cycling on San Francisco’s less-hilly streets, or hiding out at her neighbourhood wine bar.

She is the author of the upcoming book, Print, Pattern, Sew: Block Printing Basics and Simple Sewing Projects for an Inspired Wardrobe, to be published by Roost Books in May 2018. Learn more about Jen at, or follow her on Instagram at @jenhewett.

ACE CAMP IN JAIPUR, INDIA | notes from Angela

  • You are required to get a TOURIST VISA for this Ace Camp.  We will send you information after registration.
  • India can be overwhelming for the first time visitor. It is not for the fearful traveler nor for the person who is not open to cultures, plans delayed, or a schedule which may go completely and utterly wacky. Participants in this Ace Camp should not be weary travellers. In a country of one billion-strong-and-growing, you will likely feel disoriented and overwhelmed, but that's part of the experience and fun.
  • If you prefer a journey free of hassle and without being hectic - this may not be the Ace Camp for you. Patience is a virtue in India.
  • This is for the calm traveler, the person who wants to travel to India with the safety of a group - but it is also for the adventurer, the person who wants to feel all their senses.  India, as beautiful and exotic as it is can be frustrating.
  • If you have specific allergies (i.e. peanuts, wheat, gluten, dairy, etc.), it will be harder, but not impossible, for you to find food that suits your needs. Many dishes are prepared with garlic, dairy and yogurt are often used to temper the spicier dishes. We are unable to cater to any specific dietary issues - you will need to manage this. All meals will have vegetarian courses.
  • Consult a doctor, nurse or health care provider, or visit a travel health clinic preferably six weeks before you travel. (side note:  If you have any pending health concerns you should contact your health care provider prior to registration of this Ace Camp)

Should you have any questions prior to registration please ask here.

Our group will be staying at the Hotel Diggi Palace. Hotel Diggi Palace is in the heart of Rajasthan's famous Pink City of Jaipur. Surrounded by acres of beautifully manicured gardens, this converted haveli built in the 1860s is a haven of peace and tranquility located 5 minutes from the bustling Old Walled City of Jaipur. Cars with drivers can be accessed through the front desk or our land agent to take you to various shops and restaurants.

It is 14 kms from Jaipur Airport and 1.5 kms from the railway station.

Register before April 30th, 2018 for the opportunity to submit artwork to be turned into a complimentary custom woodblock to use during our printing workshop in Bagru. PRINT WITH YOUR OWN DESIGN!

Fine Print: Complimentary wood block is available for anyone who completes registration and deposit payments by April 30th, 2018. If you register between April 30th and July 30th, 2018 you have the option to pay $100 extra if you would like to design and order a block, registration after July 30th will not allow enough time to process artwork, therefore this option is not available after July 30th, 2018. Artwork will need to be submitted 2 months prior to your journey to India. Artwork instructions will be emailed to you and will have to be followed in order for the artwork to be useable by the skilled carvers. Vector artwork is preferred, but clean ink drawings may also be submitted. Further details will be provided after registration.
