About the trip:

Travel to the volcanic outcrop of Ischia in the beautiful Bay of Naples, Italy for a workshop with professional photographer Lucy Laucht. Ischia is an intriguing concoction of buried necropolises, abundant gardens and spectacular scenery, with forests, vineyards and picturesque small towns.

We will be learning on-the-go as we explore the island from the land and water. We'll relax in thermal baths, drink wine, learn about family cooking and walk our way around the wonderfully tiny island of Procida.

WHERE WE'RE STAYING:

Impressively imposing, Ischia's Castello Aragonese is as much part of the history of the island as it's thermal waters and the surrounding sea. It is within the walls of this magnificent 15th century stronghold, in what was once a monastery, that Albergo Il Monastero is located. Like the former monastery, today's Hotel Il Monastero is a fascinating labyrinth of corridors, passageways and stairs, all of which sooner or later lead to the hotel's pretty internal courtyards, splendid public rooms and sweeping sea view terraces. Bedrooms offer breathtaking views across to the Italian mainland in one direction, Capri in another and Ischia itself in the other.

June is a wonderful time of year to visit Italy. Ischia enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate of long, hot summers with minimal rain. The weather is generally very warm with consistent sunshine throughout the month.

Temperatures range from 18°C to 27°C, which means you should pack light clothes for your stay and a light jacket to prepare for the odd shower.

Make your own way to our hotel in Naples. The airport is easily accessed as its just a few minutes away.

This evening we have a meet + greet welcome dinner with Lucy.

DAY TWO

Breakfast at the hotel

This morning we travel by ferry from Naples to Ischia. We will arrive on the island and take a transfer to our hotel in Ischia Ponte.

Lunch on the terrace of the hotel

Later this afternoon we will visit the beautiful harbour village of Sant’ Angelo for our first photography session with Lucy. We will walk around the village, explore the local architecture featuring typical whitewashed fishermen's houses and narrow alleyways. We will enjoy sunset and learn about shooting during different lights of day.

Dinner - in Sant’ Angelo

DAY THREE

We have an early start this morning in order to capture the soft hues of sunrise and tourist free streets. Today we will be exploring and studying the community of Ischia Ponte in greater detail. We will divide our focus into two parts; part one: photographing the architecture of the town, including a visit to the fascinating and incredibly photogenic Aragonese castle that sits high above town on a volcanic outcrop.

Lunch - TBD

The second part of our focus will be photographing people in daily life. We will visit Spiaggia dei Pescatori, a particularly photogenic beach with some very Wes Anderson inspired colors. We will explore neighbourhoods and other little shops along the way.

Dinner - on your own

We will re-convene at the hotel in the evening for an informal review session with Lucy.

DAY FOUR

This morning is free for you to relax or explore on your own, there are plenty of areas within walking distance of our hotel to find a dose of inspiration.

Lunch on your own

This afternoon we will venture out and around the island to explore and photograph some of the wineries of Ischia (and do a little tasting in between!)

Our guide will explain about the history, archaeology, customs and traditions of locals. Particular attention will be paid to the rocks and vegetation that characterize Ischia. We will visit a typical local cellar and learn about pressing techniques, barrels and special storage, and their unique air cooling techniques.

Dinner - local restaurant

DAY FIVE

Breakfast at the hotel

This morning we take the ferry to Procida island a short distance away. Its narrow, sun-bleached streets are the domain of the locals. This is the Bay of Naples’ smallest island and considered its best-kept secret. The island is small and we will spend the day exploring on foot, searching for interesting light, angles and subjects to photograph along the way.

Lunch - local cafe

This afternoon and into evening we continue our walking exploration of Procida

Dinner - local restaurant

We hope to catch sunset here, the light is perfect for another photo session. Boat transfer back to Ischia in the evening.

DAY SIX

Breakfast at the hotel

This morning we travel to the other side of Ischia for a morning of relaxation at the Negombo Thermal Gardens. Set on the shores of the Bay of San Montano, Negombo is considered one of the richest therapeutic basins in the region and a generous source of thermal water. Featuring 15 different thermal pools including a Japanese Labyrinth Bath, a private beach and over 500 species of exotic plants, this is bliss.

Nearby to Negombo is Mezzatorre Resort, situated on photogenic stretch of coast line this is where we will eventually head for lunch and go looking for a few more photo opportunities.

The rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax or explore on your own. Perhaps return to a favourite spot on the island to take more photos, a visit to the Mortella Gardens, there is still so much to do and see.

Dinner on your own

DAY SEVEN

Breakfast at the hotel

We start this morning with hands-on cooking class and a fantastic opportunity to learn about food photography and different lighting. You will learn about local culinary traditions, folklore and historical recipes. You will help prepare a multi course meal including homemade pasta, ragu sauce, an eggplant dish and a typical Neapolitan dessert. Once ready we gather aorund the family dining table and delight in stories of their family tree.

Later this afternoon we board a small private boat which will take us on a grand tour around Ischia. Admire the beauty of the island from the water and swim in some of the most beautiful bays, inaccessible by land. We'll learn more about island folklore and curiosities. We will stop by sea caves, and dock while the crew prepare a simple Italian inspired dinner on board all sourced from local crops. We will slowly make our way back to our hotel while continuing to enjoy the last of the evening light.
